
Q: Do I need to prep the asphalt before sealing?
A: Yes, and here is how:
1. Clean surface of dirt and grass.
2. Prime oil spots.
3. Fill cracks.
Q: Do I need 2 coats?
A: If applied by spraying method it is recommended but is not necessary. If applied by brush, roller or squeegee, 1 coat is sufficient.
Q: Should I use sand or additives?
A: It is recommended to use Silica sand and FSA or Top Tuff (View and download recommended mix sheet)
Q: What is the difference between additives?
A: FSA is a quick drying additive: If you need to drive on sealer less than 24 hours after application.
Top Tuff is also a drying additive, with a fortifier for longer lasting wear, great for parking lots.
Q: What temperature should I apply sealer?
A: The recommended temperature for sealcoating is 55 degrees and above.
Q: Can I sealcoat new asphalt?
A: Yes, 60-90 days after it is installed.
Q: I have spilled sealer on an area that I shouldn't have. What is the best way to clean it up?
A: All of our driveway sealers will wash off with soap and water when the sealer is still wet. However, if it has dried, there are a couple of ways to clean it up. There are a number of high performance citrus based cleaners available at A-Line Asphalt Products that work to dissolve dried coatings.
Q: What is the best way to fix cracks 3/4" or smaller?
A: The #1 way is hot applied Direct Fire or Oil Jacket. Cold Pourable Crack Filler will work or Gatorpave is a great way to repair cracks if hot filler is not available.
Q: What do I do for repairing larger cracks?
A: It depends on the size, some larger cracks can be filled in with Black Beauty sand, then Hot Crack Filler or fill in crack with Hot Tape. If the crack is too wide and deep, mill and patch with asphalt.
Q: What traffic paint should I use?
A: For sealcoating, use a water born traffic paint.
If new asphalt or old asphalt, you can use water born or low VOC traffic paint.
Q: Should I use a water born sealer or can I use oil?
A: It is always recommended to use water born sealer.
Oil will tend to wear faster, retract when the temperature is over 90 degrees. You cannot spray oil base in NJ, unless the VOC complies with the D.E.P.
Q: Why do I need to seal my asphalt?
A: Sealcoating, when applied correctly will protect and extend the life of your asphalt.
Q: Why should I crack fill?
A: By keeping cracks filled, you will stop grass and weeds from growing through the asphalt. Most importantly, filling the cracks will prevent moisture from getting underneath the asphalt in the winter and freezing. Moisture freezing underneath asphalt is the main reasons that cracks form and grow.
Q: How often should I sealcoat my driveway?
A: If the sealer is mixed and applied correctly, sealcoat should last 3-5 years on a residential job, and 3 years on a commercial job. Sealcoating your driveway every year could result in over-sealing, which can cause surface cracking.
