 Mid Life Couple Embarks On New Business
Venture With Savings And Family Backing

Debbie Bathen and Larry McGinnis, an Egg Harbor Twp married couple have taken on
an enormous “middle of life” step by opening an Asphalt Products Supply business in the Gloucester County town of  Newfield, NJ. The company, named A-Line Asphalt Products, LLC located at 14 Rena Street in Newfield is an asphalt seal coat, materials and equipment/tools supply house which caters to paving contractors, municipalities and developers throughout Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean and Salem Counties in NJ. A-Line Asphalt Products, LLC will be the only full line supplier of asphalt products within approximately 80 miles of Newfield, NJ and the grand opening is set for April 28, 2010.

The couple decided to open their own business when Mr. McGinnis was laid off from
his job as a paving estimator in May of 2009, and Ms. Bathen, a Realtor saw the downward slide in Real Estate sales. Say the couple “We really saw the end coming
up fast, so we pooled our savings and years of knowledge and decided to take the plunge into our own business”. With business plan in hand, a hope and a dream, the endeavor was started. First going to the Small Business Development Center in
Atlantic County for guidance, a wealth of information was provided by the SBDC at no cost. “Joe Molineaux, Director of the Atlantic County SBDC saw solid promise in our business plan, encouraged us along the way, sent us to a terrific accountant at no
cost for our financial projections, and guided us through the lending process” said McGinnis. After a lengthy process with the banks, and coming close to the deadline to make the April opening date, McGinnis and Bathen were hitting brick walls with the banks. “ We really didn’t need all that much money to add to our own savings to
make the business work- about as much as a new car would cost, but it seemed like
we were just getting a lot of run around with no commitment for a loan” says Ms. Bathen.  “We hoped that President Obama’s economic stimulus plan for loans for
small businesses would help us…but one bank said our loan request was too small,
and another one didn’t want to extend us a line of credit, because even though our credit scores were excellent, we didn’t have any equity in our home” Bathen
continues.  Refusing to throw in the towel, the couple started talking to private investors, and had some prospects there, but in the eventual end, they ended up
with family support to help finance the last bit needed to get up and running for their business.

“I am confidant that the products and services that A-Line Asphalt Products, LLC
offers will not only benefit us, but will be an economic help to our area. We will hire
help in the future, and the contractors will help the area by patronizing area restaurants, gas stations, etc.” says McGinnis. Ms. Bathen and Mr. McGinnis look
forward to a new chapter in their lives, and feel that success comes at any point in
